JOYCE CONCORDANCE.

Thanks to a comment by PF at MonkeyFilter, I’ve discovered this amazing Concordance Text Search of Joyce’s works. You can, for instance, enter “ahem” and discover that it occurs once in Finnegans Wake, in the line:
484.29: ahem ! Anglicey: Eggs squawfish lean yoe nun feed marecurious.
Tidings of great joy into our nevertoolatetolove box!

Couldn’t resist trying it out with two quotes, one which I still recall from reading Ulysses in its first full legal printing in the UK (1968 or 1969). It’s Bloom on the crapper,
“He read on, seated calm above his own rising smell.”
And, of course, from Finnegans Wake
    “Three quarks for Muster Mark!”
The second it came up trumps on, the first, oddly, had no hits for ‘seated calm’, but provided the line on a search for ‘calm’.
    Great link!

  2. I wonder how many people tried that “rising smell” line first thing; I know I did. The site, I think, is getting overwhelmed now, it’s very slow.
    I also searched for “potato.”

  3. It doesn’t seem to be too good on multiple word searches, unfortunately. No, no google it, returning a line at a time. Fun nevertheless, though seriously in need of an update. It’s exactly the same as when I first started using it in 2000.

  4. Hey, P,
branch-out: for non-Ukranian speaking folks you can link to other Lwow/Lviv/Leopolis/etc photo sites I sent to you (and others) originally. If you’ve lost it, I still have a bookmark.
    You’re welcome.

  5. Tatyana – I’ve switched email addresses, so I don’t have your email any more. If you could send me those links, I’d really appreciate it! (PS You could always become a monkey, too!)
Also, about the searchable index, I forgot to note the line numbers are often off by one of two, at least in FW. I haven’t used the other ones.
