This flashy website (created as a companion to, and presumably teaser for, Ellen Lupton’s book of the same name) tells you pretty much anything you want to know about the basics of typography. (Via MetaFilter.)

    Languagehat, I’ve just found a computer game I can actually understand: the Italics one. Nice site. Oh, and the information isn’t bad, either.

    I’d never really thought much about type myself, or about the political and aesthetic factors which go into choosing one, but I just finished Reading Lolita in Tehran, and was inspired (by the note about the type at the end of the book) to check out the typology website, which is really lovely. The other thing I found interesting at the end of the book (and I’ve noticed it more and more commonly appended to “best sellers”of late) is the Reader’s Guide/Questions for Discussion. LH, can I request an entry on this phenomenon? Do you or your readers find that they are being illuminated or railroaded by this kind of thing? On a related tangent (how’s that for an oxymoron?), what do you think about the apparently expanding trend toward reading groups? I’m sure you saw that New Yorker insert attributing it all to Oprah and 9/11…

    I don’t like the “reader’s guide” phenomenon, which is redolent (to me) of elementary-school books; so far I think I’ve successfully avoided buying any books that have them. As for reading groups, I suppose they’re a Good Thing, but they don’t impinge on my life — I’ve always been a solitary reader.
