YIDDISH DICTIONARY ONLINE.

The Yiddish Dictionary Online is just what it says; you can open it in English or Yiddish alphabetical order or use the search box. This will save me having to go over to the bookshelf and pull down my Weinreich, and most people don't have a Weinreich to pull down, so this is a great thing to know about. (Via Plep.)

Hm... what's about the same for [Biblical] Hebrew?

Yeah, it doesn't get much better than Weinreich for Yiddish... W A Y better than Harduf... But I haven't used any Yiddish dictionaries for about 5 years, so I'm rusty... ;)

I just received Weinreich's dictionary a few days ago in the mail, with an excellent price of US$19.80 at Amazon. I don't regret ordering it, but I actually thought at the time about how unlikely it was that there was a Yiddish-English dictionary online (like dict.leo.org for German). For some reason I didn't make a Google search, but it seems fitting to see one mentioned a few days later on one of my favourite blogs.

I don't mean to be churlish -- it's a wonderful endeavor, and all volunteer! -- but it is not without errors. On that basis alone it shouldn't be equated with Weinreich. Still, it's a great resource.

A scanned copy of the 1910 edition of Harkavy's Yiddish-English dictionary, another one of the classic lexicons, is online at
