You can put me down as a big fan of that word. :) I've even managed on purpose to use it in a few of the articles I've written for a large online media network. It's fun to see where it comes from.

I have always thought of language to behave like a wild horse... impredictable, fresh, surprising. Sometimes it's totally arbitrary, sometimes it makes such incredibe associations. Your example confirms that too...

They're related, but this is a different verb. OED:
f[rom] lang, long (not recorded in OE.), aphetic f. OE. ȝelang at hand, dependent on, ALONG a.1 (= OHG. gilang, kalang akin). The simple vb. is now superseded in general use by the compound BELONG v.
